AI's Revolution in the Film World: New Stages, Genres, and Experiences on the Horizon

As a futurist, I have been examining trends across different sectors, and the intersection of artificial intelligence and the film industry has particularly piqued my interest. This sector may face significant disruption as AI advances.

In this blog, we delve into three distinct phenomena that could radically alter the film industry in the future.

AI-generated actors

AI-generated actors have already sparked discussions in Hollywood. Actors and filmmakers have expressed concerns that AI could replace real actors in the future [1]. Thanks to AI, it's possible to create digital doubles of actors, and even bring deceased actors back to the big screen, as was the case with James Dean [2]. Some Americans have expressed their skepticism about the use of AI in films, with 61% of respondents considering the use of AI-generated actors a bad idea [3].

New movie genres

AI has the potential to create new movie genres and bring fresh perspectives to storytelling. An article in Forbes mentions that AI-generated TV and movie productions are quickly becoming a reality [4]. As technology advances, it's likely that we'll see entirely new kinds of films created with the aid of AI. For instance, the trailer for the movie "Genesis," which was created by AI, is so convincing that it caused a buzz on Twitter [5]. AI has also been used to create an entire short film, as BAFTA nominee Oscar Sharp demonstrated [6]. Finnish futurist Risto Linturi executed a speech (both content and video) with artificial intelligence, which was presented at the first World Congress of Future Committees. The speech was illustrated by Dalle2, and the speech synthesis as well as face animation was produced by Synthesia [7].

Changing movie experience

AI is also altering the way viewers experience films. AI can tailor movies and TV shows for a more personal experience, and it can also revolutionize the movie theater experience. Venice Film Festival 2023 showcased how AI and XR technology are changing the movie-watching experience [8, 9]. With the aid of AI, movie production, distribution, and audience involvement can change significantly, as an article from MaxBlizz in 2023 indicates [10].

The latest development in AI also enables an ordinary user to generate videos, and this is evolving rapidly.

The convergence of artificial intelligence and the film industry unveils new, exciting opportunities for both professionals and ordinary users alike. While many challenges may lay ahead, the innovation brought by AI creates a new arena where the boundaries between storytelling and technology dissolve. In the future, we may witness unprecedented cinematic experiences, and each one of us has the potential to be part of this revolution in cinematic expression. AI paves new paths for creativity, thereby expanding the magical world of cinema further, allowing room for new visions and dreams.
